1986-1993 5.0 Mustang P600B and P1SC
The highlights of the 1986 to 1993 timeline of the 5.0 liter Ford Mustang include a third generation makeover in 1987. Horsepower was increased to 225 for the 5.0 liter 1987 Mustang. In 1993, the Special Vehicles Team was created to concern itself with Ford's performance image. Their first product was the SVT Cobra, rated at 235 horsepower.
You can put a Procharger P600B or a Procharger P1SC supercharger onto a Mustang from this era and get big gains in horsepower depending on what kind of intercooler the supercharger kit includes. In general, the P600B, while a good, dependable supercharger, is a step down in features from the more expensive P1SC.If you use a P600B to add 9 to 14 psi, you can get horsepower gains of 60 to 85% for a 2 core intercooler. With a P1SC, boosting psi to 14 to 20 psi can give 85% gains in horsepower with a 2 core intercooler. The intercooler is the heat exchange device used on supercharged, or "forced induction" internal combustion engines to increase air charge density through constant pressure cooling. Cooler air intake means a denser intake charge to the engine, allows more air and fuel to be combusted and increases the output of the engine.
The differences between the P600B and the P1SC are in the areas of step-up ratio, maximum psi boost, and maximum rpm. Additionally, the P1SC is self contained, while the P600B is not, meaning that to install the P600B you'll have to punch a hole in the oil pan.
Typical maximum horsepower for the P600B is 775, while it's 825 for the P1SC. For the P600B, the maximum rpm is 60,000, and for the P1SC, the maximum RPM is 62,000.
Internal step-up ratio is 3.05:1 with the P600B and 4.10:1 with the P1SC. The step-up ratio is the number of times an impeller rotates for every engine revolution. Simply aiming for the maximum step-up boost isn't the best choice. If you use a proper step-up ratio, you can use a larger diameter drive pulley for better belt traction. A step-up ratio of 4.10:1 is considered excellent for street cars (and some strip cars), while the lower, 3.05:1 step-up ratio for the P600B is certainly nothing to be ashamed of.
The choice between the P600B and the P1SC superchargers for a Mustang of this era comes down largely to personal preference, since the specs on the two are so similar.
